Exploring Meaning Through Symbolism and Story
Sometimes words are not enough.
There are moments in life when thoughts, feelings, and experiences can feel difficult to explain. We may know something is important, yet struggle to find the language to express it. At these times, creativity and symbolism can provide another pathway to understanding.

SandStory is a creative and reflective approach that uses sand, miniature figures, and symbolic representation to explore experiences, emotions, relationships, and personal narratives. Rather than relying solely on conversation, individuals are invited to create scenes within a tray of sand using carefully selected miniature objects. These scenes often become a visual story that reflects thoughts, feelings, memories, hopes, challenges, or aspects of life that may not yet be fully understood.
One of the unique strengths of SandStory is that it allows experiences to be externalised. By placing thoughts and feelings into the sand, individuals can step back and observe them from a different perspective. This process often creates opportunities for deeper reflection, greater self-awareness, and new insight.
I use SandStory throughout my work with adults, teenagers, and within clinical supervision. For some people, it offers a gentle way of exploring emotions that feel difficult to put into words. For others, it can reveal patterns, strengths, and possibilities that may have remained hidden within everyday thinking.

Within supervision, SandStory can help practitioners explore client work, professional identity, relational dynamics, ethical dilemmas, and the emotional impact of their work. Through symbolic representation, supervisees are often able to notice connections and perspectives that may not emerge through discussion alone.
For adults and teenagers, SandStory can support exploration of life transitions, relationships, self-esteem, emotional wellbeing, personal growth, and experiences that feel complex or difficult to express. The process is not about creating the "right" story or interpreting symbols in a fixed way. Instead, meaning emerges through curiosity, reflection, and the individual's own understanding of their experience.
No artistic ability is required. There is no pressure to be creative or produce something that looks a certain way. The focus is simply on exploration, self-discovery, and creating a safe space where thoughts and feelings can be expressed symbolically.
At its heart, SandStory is about making meaning. It offers an opportunity to slow down, reflect, and connect with aspects of ourselves that may be waiting to be seen, understood, and heard.
Whether used within clinical supervision, personal development, or wellbeing work, SandStory provides a creative and compassionate space where insight, reflection, and growth can unfold naturally.
